Lights,Camera, Action!

Republic Airport was once again the setting for not one, but two different television shoots last week. Damages, starring Glenn Close, was filming at the airport terminal for several days, transforming the Long Island setting into a small airport in Maine. At the same time, Unforgettable, with Poppy Montgomery, was filming in and around the SheltAir building, and on half of one of the airport's runways. They used the American Airpower Museum for meals, so several of us got to watch the action up close.

The scene they were filming out on the runway had a "suspect" attempting to flee in a light aircraft, while the "detectives" chase the airplane onto the runway, and shoot out the nose wheel to bring it to a stop.

The crew taxied the airplane up the runway, with a Dodge Charger chasing along side, and a camera truck following along for filming.

After dark, they headed into the SheltAir hangar, but also did a little filming outside with the airplane.

Photo Fun with Fred...

So Fred calls me up and says he's having a few photo folks over to have some fun and try some new things. With Fred, you never know what to expect, so you never say no! When I got there, he had a fish tank on the table, with extra flashes, some food coloring, and other assorted "playthings".

This is Fred, by the way...

Once we were done with the water, we dried everything off and started playing with lights.

These were created using (carefully) broken light bulbs in a work light holder. Just a quick touch of the plug into the outlet gives a spark of light and a wisp of smoke. A little off-camera flash and a black backdrop completes the scene. Very interesting to try, but if you do - take all necessary safety precautions!

As I said, you never know what you are going to end up with when Fred wants to try something, but it's always worth it!

It's That Time Again

The calendar page flips from 2011 to 2012, and another new year begins. Many use the new year as a reason to re-evaluate life, make new plans and changes. I've never been about making "New Year's Resolutions" - who needs that kind of pressure? Instead, I'll start the new year, and the third year of posting here, with a look at Jones Beach on New Year's Day. It's now three or four years that I've gone down to Jones Beach, to walk along the ocean and take a few photos.

"Happy" wouldn't sit still long enough for her owner to take a picture, so I offered to help.

Later this week, I'll take a look back at 2011, and some of my favorite photos from that recently departed year.

A Special Visitor to Republic Airport

The producers of the television show Pan Am were back at Republic Airport recently, filming scenes for an upcoming episode. And once again, they brought a classic airliner in for the shoot. This time, it was the Boeing 707 owned by actor John Travolta. The airplane is restored with historic QANTAS markings, and had temporary Pan Am colors applied for the show.

The transformation complete, the big 707 was ready for her close ups.

The American Airpower Museum once again hosted the production company, with the museum hangar being used to prepare extras, for catering, and as a backdrop for some of the scenes. Spending two nights - all night, until sunrise - with them, gave me the opportunity to meet many of the cast and crew, who were all friendly and happy to talk about their show. Lead actor Mike Vogel, who plays Captain Dean Lowrey on the show, is a pilot himself, and he spend much of his time between shots with museum volunteers, talking aviation.

This time, Republic Airport acted as a stand-in for Haiti, where the crew of Jet Clipper Majestic have to make an emergency landing in an episode titled Unscheduled Departure which will air this Sunday, November 13.

A Big Week of UN Visitors

Each year, the opening session of the United Nations General Assembly brings many of the world's leaders to New York City. The week is also a special treat for local area aviation photographers, as a collection of aircraft rarely seen in the area gather at Kennedy Airport.Kuwaiti government A310 on approach to JFK.

One of the highlights of the week - a Russian Il-96, the first time I've gotten a good photo of one of these.

This Boeing 727 brought the South African delegation.

When the President visits, the Secret Service brings in a variety of equipment and vehicles to support the trip. Here, an Air Force C-17, used to carry that gear, departs JFK.

Finally, the big VC-25 arrives as "Air Force 1".

And a short time later departs again, as "SAM 28", after dropping off the President.

But my catch of the year as far as UN traffic is concerned...a Colombian Air Force 767 Air Refueling Tanker departs LaGuardia Airport heading back home with that country's delegation.

It's only the second time that tanker has been in New York. A huge thank you to my friend Ron for alerting me to it.

Labor Day at the Museum

After days of packing everything away to weather Hurricane Irene, it was a rush to get things back to normal at the American Airpower Museum in time for Labor Day weekend.

The museum celebrated the Centennial of Naval Aviation this weekend, with our Corsair and Avenger seeing action.

One of the highlights for me - getting a flight in the museum's C-47.

Jim Vocell, museum VP of Operations and Chief Pilot, was at the controls up front.

It wasn't just a joyride, however. The flight was part of the museum's D-Day Experience, where patrons get a taste of what it was like for the paratroopers who dropped into Normandy on June 6, 1944.

We also had a tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen, including a "Missing Man" formation flyover to honor Lt. Bill Wheeler, who passed in June.

As always, there was plenty of flying to be seen. Chris Baranaskas and Glamorous Gal joined us...

After wrapping up the C-47 flights, Jim Vocell displayed his versatility, piloting the museum's B-25 and F4U Corsair.

A Sad Weekend

A clear, blue sky, white smoke trails, and the roar of engines - air shows are fun and exciting, watching skilled aviators demonstrate the capabilities of their aircraft as well as their own abilities. Unfortunately, behind those thrilling maneuvers, danger can be lurking. That simple fact was driven home this past weekend, when three separate accidents each claimed the life of an airshow performer.

At the Kansas City Air Show, pilot Bryan Jensen was lost in the crash of his biplane while performing before a large crowd of visitors during Saturday's performance. On Sunday, wingwalker Todd Green was performing his signature stunt - climbing from the wing of a Stearman biplane to the skid of a helicopter - when he fell about 200 feet to his death at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Michigan.

On Saturday, after completing a demonstration at the Bournemouth Air Festival, Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, of the Royal Air Force Demonstration Team Red Arrows, died in the crash of his BAE Systems Hawk T1 jet. Egging, an 11 year veteran of the RAF, saw combat in Afghanistan flying the Harrier jump jet before joining the Red Arrows for the 2011 season.

Condolences to the families and friends of these three fine aviators.

Slipping the Surly Bonds with Dazzlin' Deb

I was at the American Airpower Museum on Sunday, when Paul Farber says "I'm going flying, want to come along?" Well, you don't have to ask me twice. Paul owns a beautiful T-6 Texan, which he keeps at the museum.

We departed Republic Airport and headed down to the south shore of the Island.

A trip east along Great South Bay, and we were soon arriving at Bayport Aerodrome, a small grass field, and home to a number of historic aircraft.

After a short visit at Bayport, we were back in the air, heading home.

What a fun way to spend an afternoon! Paul let me do much of the flying - while I was busy looking for traffic, watching for landmarks so I could figure out where we were, and trying to keep an eye on the instruments, I made sure to take a few moments and soak in the experience - the sound of the radial engine, the feel of the controls, and the amazing sight of looking out the canopy, seeing blue sky, puffy clouds, and a brilliant sun overhead.

It's a beautiful airplane, flies well, and sounds spectacular! Thanks Paul!

An American Hero

William Wheeler, a member of the famed WWII Tuskegee Airmen, passed away today.

A Detroit native, Col. Wheeler was a student at Howard University when he was selected for training at Tuskegee Air Field. After completing training, he flew the P-51 on bomber escort and ground attack missions before being grounded by a medical condition. Following the war, he moved to New York City, and was a resident of Hempstead for the past 47 years.

I've had the honor to meet and speak with Col. Wheeler many times over the past few years. He was a regular visitor to the American Airpower Museum, and was eager to tell the story of his fellow African-American airmen. He was a gentleman, and a gentle man - soft spoken, always with a big smile on his face, he really enjoyed speaking with people. One story he related to me really told of the challenges they faced. His brother-in-law was also a member of the group, and was shot down and captured by the Germans. Fearing for what the Germans might do to him, he was surprised to discover that they treated him in accordance to the Geneva Convention rules for a captured officer. As Col. Wheeler put it "The Germans treated him better than his own superior officers had..."

We lost another American Hero today.

Airplanes are a big part of any air show...some may say that without them, there isn't an air show. But as important, if not more so, are the people that make up an air show. Whether it is the pilots, ground crew, announcers, volunteers, or spectators, there wouldn't be a show without them. With that in mind, let's take a look at some of the folks who made up the Jones Beach Air Show.

NASCAR in The Poconos

We'll take a break from the air show for a little "roundy-round" action. This past weekend, NASCAR made the first of its two annual visits to Pocono Raceway. I've been going to Pocono for more than twenty years, in hot weather, cold weather, rain, fog, even a few snow flurries! We had typical Pocono June "race weekend weather" - overnight rain, low clouds and fog in the morning...Saturday's ARCA race was stopped twice, and ultimately ended early, because heavy fog made it impossible to see the track.

Kurt Busch led the field to the green flag, driving a backup car after wrecking his primary ride in Friday practice.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. comes to the attention of his pit crew. Although he remains winless thus far in 2011, he has seen a resurgence in performance, and Pocono resulted in another top 10 finish.

The only on-track incident of the day, Greg Biffle spins coming off Turn 3 into the entrance of Pit Road. He didn't hit anything, and the spin didn't result in a caution.

Stock car racing is sometimes referred to as "Taxi Cab Racing" and at Pocono, we had a car that actually looked like a taxi cab. It's AJ Allmendinger's ride - Andrew Murstein, one of the owners of Richard Petty Motorsports, is president of Medallion Financial. The company is an investment company which specializes in loans to taxi owners. The car was painted to resemble the markings on current New York City taxis.

Pit stops are always crucial in a NASCAR race, but take on extra importance at Pocono. With its 2.5 mile length, and three different corners, Pocono sees teams employ a variety of different pit strategies to gain an advantage.

Sunday marked Gordon's 84th career win in NASCAR's premier division, tying him with Darrell Waltrip in career wins. Despite what NASCAR says, he still needs one more win to equal Bobby Allison's career total.

Naval Aviation at the Air Show

2011 marks the Centennial of Naval Aviation, with a variety of activities scheduled to celebrate the anniversary. As part of the festivities, the US Navy sent a gaggle of aircraft, including two in special anniversary markings.

Here is an F/A-18C that spent the weekend.

And a pair of E/A-18G Growlers were in attendance, including one in special colors.

And for the Grumman fans, this old Prowler was in the house.

And finally, the Super Hornet demo team performed. These Bugs are loud when the depart!

Jones Beach Air Show

Another year of the Jones Beach Air Show is in the books. While the show missed the USAF Thunderbirds (heading to their European tour) and the F-22 Raptor (grounded for safety-related issues) it turned out to be another outstanding performance.

The star of the show was Fifi, the only B-29 Super Fortress flying in the world. Fifi beat the setting sun to Republic Airport on the Wednesday prior to the show.

The American Airpower Museum once again hosted the air show participants, which included the B-17 Yankee Lady, the A-10 East Demo team, the F/A-18F Super Hornet Demo team, as well as several civilian performers and War Birds.

Here, the A-10 returns to Republic...in more ways than one. The airport had been home to the Fairchild Republic Corporation, which had a long, rich history of building aircraft for the US Air Force, and the Army Air Corps before that. The A-10 was the last aircraft produced by FRC at Republic.

Air Show is Upon Us!

Along with the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day weekend also brings the annual Jones Beach Air Show. Once again, the roar of jets and the rumble of piston engines will fill the skies over the Island. The first participants will be arriving at Republic Airport in the next few days, preparing to thrill the crowds at the beach. The show seems a bit light this year, without the USAF Thunderbirds, who are off to Europe, or the F-22 Raptor, on a safety-related stand-down from performances. Instead, we'll just have to make due with more warbirds. The flock from the American Airpower Museum will be joined by "Yankee Lady", a B-17 that is a frequent show participant. This year we will also be treated to "Fifi", the only B-29 flying in the world. "Fifi" returned to the skies last summer, and this is her first visit to Long Island in seven years.

Coinciding with the air show is the US Navy's Fleet Week in New York City. A fleet of naval vessels will be joined by fighter aircraft, helicopters, and thousands of sailors. An early arrival for Fleet Week is the only flying replica of Eugene Ely’s 1911 Curtiss Pusher. The aircraft is touring the country to celebrate the Centennial of Naval Aviation, and is spending some time at Floyd Bennett Field.

Republic Airport was the setting last month when a television film crew shot scenes for a new show. "Pan Am", a pilot episode for a series about the life and times of the flight crews of that storied airline, filmed at the airport in early March. To set the scene, a restored DC-7 airliner was flown up from Florida, spending nearly two weeks on Long Island.

No, you aren't seeing things - that airplane says "Eastern Air Lines" on it. Those are the original markings of the DC-7, in which it was restored. As part of the Hollywood "magic", temporary Pan Am markings were applied to the port side of the aircraft...

For filming, the ramp at Republic acted as a stand-in for Cuba, circa 1960, with the Pan Am aircraft and crew flying refugees out as Castro came into power.

The Airpower Museum's C-47 even got a "walk on" role...

After two all-night filming sessions, the DC-7 headed home.

April Fool!

Yes, it's been more than a month since I've posted here. No reasons why - well, no good reasons why...

I have been staying busy, between job search and photography, and waiting for Spring to arrive. We did get some great news recently. The American Airpower Museum is safe! Its location near one of the runways at Republic Airport placed it in updated FAA Runway Safety Zones, and it was under the threat of being torn down. The FAA originally said funding was available to rebuild the hangar, but three years ago reversed that decision. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Senator Charles Schumer, Congressman Steve Israel, other officials, and museum staff, the FAA agreed to not require the demolition of the museum's historic hangar, and has changed its course on the question of funding, now saying that airport funds will be available to the museum. The details still need to be worked out, but the museum is safe. It would have been an unspeakable tragedy to lose this magnificent piece of American history.

It's Race Day!

It's a sure sign of spring - even though it is cold, windy, and we are expecting a little snow here tonight - but warmer weather is on the way. Today, race season starts, with the running of the Daytona 500. It means that winter is coming to an end, that longer days and warmer temps are just around the corner. And it means only 112 days until the Pocono 500. It will be here before we know it!

And good luck to Long Island native Andy Lally, making his first start in the Daytona 500!

Some Spotting Weather

After a January that saw bitter cold weather, and a record for total snow fall, we finally have a break. With temperatures pushing into the 50s, and clear skies, a spotting trip was called for. Yes, it was windy - the gusts almost matched the temperature, but nothing was going to spoil the afternoon.

A couple of years ago, while out spotting, I sarcastically remarked "I must have seen every JetBlue airplane today!" That got me to thinking. New York is the headquarters for JetBlue, and they have extensive operations at the city's airports. Maybe I did have photos of every JetBlue airplane. Well, not quite, but I was a good bit on the way to getting the whole fleet. Checking fleet lists online, they have operated 175 different aircraft to date, including about 20 that they sold to foreign airlines. Turns out, I've now captured all but 6 of their aircraft - including all the transferred airplanes. I've had this one for a while, but today I caught it with new tail colors.

And today even featured a short, very positive, visit from one of Nassau County's Finest.

Enough Already...

The snow that fell overnight set a record. This is officially the snowiest month in history on Long Island, and it's not over yet.

Starting Fresh

It seems hard to believe, but a year has gone by since I first posted here. As I said yesterday, it's been a year of ups and downs, good times and bad. I'm not sorry to see 2010 in the rear view mirror, and I'm hoping that 2011 is a good year. While January 1 may be nothing more than an arbitrary date on a calendar, it offers an opportunity to reevaluate, make plans, and start fresh.

A new year meant another visit to Jones Beach, a little warmer than last year...

Well, it's been a while...and no excuses, I should have been more active here. Today marks the end of 2010, and it's been a tumultuous year, filled with ups and downs. I had the pleasure of working with an amazing group of people during the Decennial Census, making new friends and gaining valuable experience. The year ends with me back in "career transition" but with high hopes for what the new year brings.

It has also been an exciting year photographically, with another spectacular Jones Beach Air Show, and many outstanding events at the American Airpower Museum. Just a few of the highlights...

It's Been A While...

It's not that I haven't wanted to post...but the laptop has been in the shop for several weeks (the main board died, but it is covered under warranty!) so I've been using a computer at the library to get online. Unfortunately, that means that while I've been out shooting all month, I haven't been able to edit anything. They tell me I should have it back by the end of the week - if so, I'll have a bunch of new photos edited and posted in short order!

While I'm waiting, let me post something I shot just before the laptop died - I was playing in an empty parking lot, trying for that "Magazine Ad" type of shot.

A Little Boating Adventure...

So I get this cryptic e-mail from Gary at the American Airpower Museum last week: "Can you travel to Kingston on Sunday?" Of course, if Gary is involved, I'm in!

Turns out there is a gentleman there who owns a WWII-era PT Boat, and Gary wanted us to take some photos for future promotional use. Two other museum photographers, as well as six museum volunteer reenactors dressed in period uniforms, headed up to Kingston on Sunday morning. We found a beautifully restored PT Boat, with a crew ready to take us on a little adventure on the Hudson River.

After some dock-side photos, we headed out to the river. Rich, another museum photographer, and I sailed on a chase boat so we could capture the PT boat out on the river.

Rich and I decided we got the short end of the deal - we got some great images, but missed out on the PT boat ride! I guess there is always next time...

September 11

Saturday marked the 9th anniversary of the attacks on the United States. Once again, in New York, a Tribute in Light was illuminated marking the site of the World Trade Center, in memory of those lost on that day.

Having photographed the tribute several years from different vantage points, this year I went to the Staten Island September 11 Memorial. The memorial is on the shore, overlooking New York harbor and facing the site of the towers. A memorial service is held at the site, with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg attending this year's service.

The End of the Road

Today marks the end of my tenure with the US Census Bureau. I was hired in November 2009 to work on the Decennial Census, and moved up to the position of Assistant Manager for Administration in the Locust Valley office in February of this year.

Today, was the last day for Locust Valley office – all that is left is for the movers to come and pick up the files, computers, and furniture. It has been quite an experience, one that I will never forget. The work was challenging, and I never lost sight of the importance of what we were doing in service of the United States and our local communities.

But for me, what made the job so rewarding was the incredible people I had the opportunity to work with. A relatively small group came together, and in a few short months accomplished some amazing things. We can all be proud of the work we did on the Census, I know I am grateful for the many fine people I came to know and call friends.

Now it is on to new challenges - first and foremost securing gainful employment again, but I enter this next phase of life bolstered by the experiences and friendships of my days with the Census.

The Few

Seventy years ago, a small group of brave airmen stood up to the might of the Third Reich, defending their homeland in what became know as the Battle of Britain. On this Labor Day weekend, the American Airpower Museum honored "The Few" with a special ceremony, and some rare visitors.

After some juggling of the schedule thanks to the near-miss of Hurricane Earl, the Canadian Warplane Museum's Lancaster bomber arrived Saturday morning. This is one of only two Lancasters flying today, and the only one in North America.

We also saw a visit from Tom Duffy, with his beautiful Spitfire fighter.

Ken Rose, 83, now living on Long Island, talks about his experiences as a youth during the Battle of Britain with Acting Consul-General and Deputy Head of Mission, Dominic Meiklejohn, OBE.

Gusty crosswinds hampered the flying schedule, but finally on Monday calmer winds prevailed, and these historic aircraft were able to take to the skies.

One of the more poignant moments of the weekend. Tom Duffy is talking with the sister of Robert Minnick. Minnick was a Long Island native, who joined the RCAF in 1940, and was trained as a pilot. In August 1941, Minnick was killed in Scotland while training to fly the Spitfire. He was the first Long Island resident to be lost in WWII. Among his effects, his pilot's log was returned to his sister, however she never really knew what all the entries meant. When she heard there was going to be a Spitfire at the museum, she and her son came down to see it and the pilot. Tom spent some time explaining the entries, telling her about the types of aircraft and missions her brother flew during training. She was absolutely thrilled to see the aircraft, talk to Tom, and learn more about her brother, nearly 70 years after his death

Remembering TWA Flight 800

In the darkening skies of July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800 departed New York's Kennedy Airport en route to Paris. As the Boeing 747 climbed over the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Long Island, the jet was torn apart by an explosion. All 230 passengers and crew members aboard were lost. Tonight, fourteen years later, families and friends gathered again in Smith Point Park, at the memorial to the crash victims, to remember their loved ones.

The Fire Underground

Centralia, a small town about an hour southwest of Wilkes-Barre, PA, was founded in 1866, and was a thriving coal-country community, reaching a population of over 2,500 people by the mid-1960s. Today, fewer than a dozen remain. In 1962, while burning trash in the town landfill, an underground coal seam was ignited. Although the fire was thought to be extinguished, it remained burning underground, spreading through the mines which crisscrossed below the town. Over the years, a number of unsuccessful attempts were made to extinguish the fire. Finally, in the early 1980s, when a number of sink holes and subsidences opened up, the true extent of the situation was discovered. Ultimately, the federal government purchased the land, and paid to relocate the residents. A handful of residents have remained in the town. Most of the buildings have been torn down, leaving an almost empty grid of streets and sidewalks.

I've made two visits to Centralia in the past year and a half. On my first visit, on January 1, 2009, rising smoke could clearly be seen in several areas, and patches of ground clear of snow told of the higher temperatures below.

I made another trip to Centralia this past Sunday to further explore the area. I ran into a film crew from The History Channel shooting footage for an upcoming program.

Route 61 was a four-lane highway heading south out of Centralia. After the roadway repeatedly cracked and buckled from the fire, approximately three quarters of a mile of the highway was closed, and a new two-lane road constructed to the east of the original road. Heading south on the closed section of highway, the road appears to be in serviceable, if unmaintained, condition. Grass and weeds have sprung up along the sides and in the center median, but the pavement is still intact.

About one half mile south of the northern end, you come across the first real signs of the damage caused by the fire. This fissure, some thirty feet long, one to two feet deep, and two to three feet wide, is evidence of the fire in the mountain below.

Continue another hundred yards south, and you see more damage - this section of roadway has buckled.

And everywhere on the roadway, you see graffiti - some of it profound, much of it profane.

Local riders use the section as part of their off-road trails around Centralia.

Mopar Heaven

The fairgrounds in Carlisle, Pennsylvania are home to a number of car shows annually, most grouped around specific brands or types - there is a show for GM products, Fords, Corvettes, Trucks, you name it, they have a show for it.

My favorite show, though, and one I've been to for most of the past 14 years, is the All Chrysler Nationals. The mechanics of the show are simple - invite a number of specific cars that fit into a theme - this year it was "Barn Finds" - rent space to manufacturers and other vendors, then throw open the fairgrounds to anyone with a Chrysler product who wants to park their car or truck on the acres of this "Fun Field".

Along with seeing all those great Mopars, the show also offers the opportunity for various car clubs to meet at the fairgrounds. I have been a member of the Mopar Mailing List for close to fifteen years, and have joined them at the annual Carlisle BBQ for most of those years. It's a great way to see some terrific cars, get together with friends from around the country, and eat some amazing food!

Fireworks Night at Shea Stadium was an old tradition, and I had attended a number of them, tailgating with a group of friends. With the construction of Citi Field, the fireworks came to an end. After a three year break, the Mets introduced "Pyrotechnics Night" for 2010. Not sure what to expect, our group made plans to tailgate pre-game, then see what the night brought.

A Surprise Visitor

Word went out that a Hornet was due in to Republic Airport on Thursday. While that might seem like an exciting visitor, they are getting to be a somewhat frequent guest of the airport, and just two weeks prior we had the Blue Angels, two Canadian Forces F/A-18s, and a pair of Navy Hornets all in for the air show. Then the rumor started going around that it might be a Super Hornet. Now we're talking - we don't see them around much, so it was something to keep an eye out for. Then the big day comes, and someone living under the approach posts a couple of photos...what on earth are those pods hanging from it...wait, that's not a Hornet, that's a Growler!

Yes, the Navy sent an EA-18G Growler. The local Northrop Grumman plant designed the electronic systems for the jet, which will be taking the place of Grumman's old workhorse, the EA-6B Prowler, and the visit was for workers to see the aircraft and meet with the pilots.

The Big Show

Race day Sunday brought clouds and threats of thundershowers - in other words, typical summer weather at Pocono...the forecast called for morning rain and afternoon storms. Somehow, despite the ugly clouds, the rain held off all morning. As race time approached, I made my way up to my seat in the grandstand, ready for anything - camera, sunscreen, sandwiches, rain coat, and radio.

The pre-race activities went off without a hitch, driver introductions, the invocation and National Anthem and then it was time to fire the cars up! The skies were still dark, but the field pulled away for a few pace laps before taking the green. Unfortunately, the rain beat the field to the green flag - coming out of Turn 3 to start the race, rain began to fall.

After a brief, intense, rain shower, the clouds blew out, and with the sun shining and the wind blowing, crews got the track ready to race in record time.

After the rain, officials found a patch of asphalt had come up at the exit of pit road. They filled it before the race began, but in the finest traditions of Pennsylvania highway construction, they placed orange cones around the repair and let the drivers race while the patch material cured.

Action in the pits is always intense.

The race was the usual Pocono blend of pit strategy, long green flag stretches, and some intense racing - two and three wide in the turns, and five and six wide on the front stretch. A late race caution set up a Green/White/Checker shootout, which led to a not-unexpected last lap crash on the Long Pond Straight.

When the smoke cleared, the results were familiar - Denny Hamlin in Victory Lane for the fourth time in the past five races.

One last bit of excitement after the checkered flag - Joey Logano wasn't happy with Kevin Harvick after Harvick spun him late in the race. Logano stopped at Harvick's pit to express his displeasure.

It was off to the races once again - Pocono Raceway, the big triangle in the Pocono mountains, hosted the first of two NASCAR race weekends. And of course I was there. This marked the 40th NASCAR Cup Series race I have attended at Pocono. We were treated to a thrilling, and remarkably clean, ARCA race on Saturday.

As usual, the ARCA race had a wide variety of entrants - the young and old - 18-year-old Chad Finley to 75-year-old James Hylton and everything in between, up-and-coming drivers looking for experience to move on to NASCAR, and the ARCA veterans who have run the series for years, like Frank Kimmel, Bobby Gerhart, and Brad Smith. After a spirited battle between Craig Goess and Mikey Kile, Goess went on to win the race.

Memorial Day

For too many people, Memorial Day is just one more holiday on the calendar, a day off from work and a time for sales and barbecues. But Memorial Day means so much more - a day to remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of America's freedom.

At the American Airpower Museum, this is never forgotten. This year, the museum honored seven CIA officers who were killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in December 2009. This was a rare event - the CIA doesn't hold public memorials to their personnel killed in action, in fact many remain anonymous due to the nature of their work. To mark this unusual memorial, Michael Sulick, Director of the National Clandestine Service of the CIA, spoke at the service.

Congressman Steve Israel, a long-time supporter of the museum, helped arrange the tribute.

Major Scott Clyman, Air Force Reserve F-16 pilot and museum trustee, presents a flag to Michael Sulick. Clyman carried the flag during a mission in support of the attack on the CIA employees in Afghanistan.

At the conclusion of the memorial service, B-17 Yankee Lady, escorted by museum aircraft, flew Director Sulick and others over the Statue of Liberty, where they dropped roses in honor of the CIA officers.

Sunday was back to the tower for the final act of the show. With winds out of the north, most aircraft were using Runway 1, meaning they would be airborne by the time they reached the tower. Most knew we were watching, and it turned into something of a limbo contest to see could make the lowest pass.

Officially, the Jones Beach Air Show is two days, but for true enthusiasts, there are days of activities to experience. Friday was my beach day - down to Jones Beach for show practice. Four or five years ago, Friday practice was a well-kept secret, only a handful of people on the beach. These days, several thousand people view practice, but it still beats the more than 200 thousand who visit over the weekend.

Air show time, that is...

Once again, the sound of afterburners fills the air around Republic Airport, as the annual Jones Beach Memorial Day Weekend Air Show comes to life. Although the show itself takes place on Saturday and Sunday down at the beach, the performers start gathering several days earlier at Republic Airport, where they will stage out of for the show. This year the Navy Blue Angels are the featured performers (they alternate years with the Thunderbirds.) Also on the schedule is a CF-18 from our friends in the Great White North, as well as an A-10 demo, the Golden Knights, and a wide variety of civilian aerobatic performers and warbirds.

Max Cleland, American Hero

He is a decorated, wounded US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, one-time head of the Veterans Administration, and a United States Senator from Georgia. Max Cleland continues to serve as the Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Among its other duties, the Commission is responsible for operating and maintaining permanent American military cemeteries in foreign countries. Secretary Cleland spoke at the American Airpower Museum on Tuesday at a reception hosted by Rep. Steve Israel, telling of his own personal history, as well as about the work done by the Commission to honor and memorialize American military personnel killed in combat.

A Lesson in Horror

The good folks at the American Airpower Museum have hosted a myriad of events, honoring a wide range of people and subjects, but Wednesday's event may have been the most poignant. The museum recently acquired a WWII M8 Greyhound armored scout car, which was introduced at a ceremony this week.

To welcome the new arrival, the museum chose to focus on one of the Greyhound's most important roles. As a scout vehicle, it primarily served at the leading edge of the armored divisions moving across Europe as the Second World War drew to a close. In that position, it was Army units in Greyhounds that liberated many of the Nazi concentration camps as they moved forward chasing retreating German troops.

May 5 marked 65 years to the day that the camp at Mauthausen was freed. The museum invited a survivor of that camp, along with Army veterans who had help liberate those camps, to speak at the ceremony.

The Greyhound was displayed behind a barbed wire fence, giving visitors a view similar to that which camp survivors saw when the American units arrived.

Listening to the stories told about the Holocaust, it was hard to find a dry eye in the house. Survivors of these horrors are getting to be fewer and few as each year goes by - hearing their stories firsthand evokes emotions not felt when reading a sterile history book. It was an amazing, emotional ceremony, one that was not to be missed.

A Rare Aviation Treat

Word spread quickly through the local aviation spotting community - a 707 was en route to Kennedy Airport. And not just any 707, but an Iranian government 707, something that hasn't been seen locally in years. Regardless of your views on world politics, this was BIG!

Phone calls and text messages flew back and forth - what time is it due in? What runway will they use? Will the sun stay out? Arrival estimates kept changing, but finally, at 6:30pm, the telltale smoke trails appeared on approach.

Not everyone was so excited...

Well, no, not really - that's Gordon, out spotting with his son, part of the crowd of more than a dozen spotters who captured the arrival. By the time the 707 arrived, he was up and shooting with the rest of us. 2010 is not even half over, but this may be the catch of the year!

NorEastCon 2010

Aside from photography, one of my other favorite pass-times is plastic model building. Not that I've built much in recent years, but I remain active in my local model club, the Long Island Scale Model Society. LISMS has been active since 1972, and I've been a member for 30 years now.

Our annual show, RepLIcon, is held each year in March, but this year, we were honored to host NorEastCon, the annual Northeast regional convention of IPMS/USA. We were doubly honored - the American Airpower Museum allowed us to host the show at the museum - a first in NorEastCon history! Seeing hundreds of models on display in an historic hangar filled with WWII vintage aircraft and other displays was special.

Visitors were treated to the sight (and sound) of a P-47 Thunderbolt starting up and taking off...

The Tugboat Graveyard

On the shores of Staten Island, old, derelict ships lay rusting and decaying, succumbing to the ravages of time and tide. It has been called the "Tug Boat Graveyard" - part salvage yard, part junk yard. Retired tug boats, ferries, fire boats and other vessels await their fate. Some are cut up by salvage crews, some simply rust away and sink into the water.

After a little morning fog burned off, Easter Sunday turned out to be the perfect day for a little walk in the park. I started out at Gantry State Park in Long Island City, overlooking Manhattan.

One of the gantry cranes that gives the park its name. They were used to load and unload barges that moved train cars across the East River onto Long Island.

From there, it was in to Central Park. With warm, sunny weather on a holiday afternoon, it seemed like half of New York was in the park.

Boys and Their Toys

Some may say it's just guys playing with kids' toys, but the quality of craftsmanship on display at the MosquitoCon plastic model show would belie that. This annual show is sponsored by our neighboring chapter to the west, New Jersey IPMS. In nearly two decades, the show has grown to some 400 models on display, and a room full of vendors selling all manner of modeling paraphernalia. Another fine job by Big Bill and his club members!

Finally on Thursday, the rains stopped, and the sun came out. It wasn't a perfect sunset, there were too many clouds for that, but what we were treated to was some beautiful color in those clouds, and that merited a run up to Bayville to enjoy it. And in the spirit of Census Day, I counted two people walking along the beach...

More warm weather on Friday had one thinking thoughts of Spring. This guy got his big, bad Chevy out for a little exercise. Don't worry, he wasn't really doing 95 mph through Glen Cove (not that you could get that kind of speed out of a Chevy anyway...) It's just a little fun with Photoshop.

Back home again, and I'm greeted by more inclement weather. And why is it you never hear anyone talk about "clement" weather. Of course, we would have to have some before we could talk about it...

In any case, I didn't let a little fog and rain deter me from a little shooting. Oyster Bay makes for an inviting photo backdrop, regardless of the conditions. A "late day" at work allowed me a little time in the morning to explore. Here, my old friend, the Lightship Nantucket, pokes through the fog. Fortunately for my photography habit, they still haven't moved her to Boston, as has been planned for several months.

And this pier seems to head out into the netherworld of the morning fog.

To the Wilds of Pennsylvania

Had to work last Sunday, but that meant Friday off, and a three day weekend with forecasts of perfect shooting weather! What do they say about "the best laid plans..."? Thursday night I found I had to head off to Pennsylvania to deal with "family matters". That meant hitting the road Friday morning for the familiar ride across New Jersey and into the mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania. I did leave the Mighty Stratus at home, making the trip in the Liberty, which I don't drive often. I had to take a quick trip through Hickory Run State Park, and did a little "off-roading" - well, I parked in an unpaved parking area so I could get this "Off Road" shot.

While I didn't have too much time for photography, I check out a few parks in the Wilkes-Barre area. This unfortunate driver ended up pulled over by a park ranger - how embarrassing!

But these folks were enjoying the sunny warm weather...

Yes, that big, bright, yellow ball made an appearance in the sky today. After a weekend of wild, wet weather, today was a Spring-like day. Yes, it would have been better if the weekend was like this, but I did take advantage of the nice weather and later sunset - thanks to the switch to Daylight Saving Time - to do a little shooting. Heading out of the office, a quick run to Glen Cove was rewarded with some sunset shooting of Sea Cliff.

Actually, I ended up doing more talking than shooting. I met up with another Newsday alumni club member. She was a photographer at the paper, and was working on a freelance assignment, shooting for a story on Sea Cliff. Small world...

Rain, rain, go away...

At least it was warm...well, warmer than it was a couple of weeks ago, when we were hit with over a foot of snow. This time, the big storm only brought heavy rains to accompany the high winds. But what a storm it was - hurricane force gusts and several inches of rain caused downed trees, flooded roads and widespread power outages.

WASPs Honored in Washington

More than sixty five years ago, a group of intrepid women answered our country's call to duty in World War II. The members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, better know as the WASPs, served as pilots, flying military aircraft in non-combat roles, freeing male pilots for combat duty. These were the first American women to fly military aircraft, but following the war, their exploits were all but forgotten. On Wednesday, some 200 surviving members were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in a Capitol Hill ceremony.

During WWII, more than 1,000 women served as pilots, ferrying military fighters, bombers and transports from factories to military airfields, and performed other non-combat flight duties. Although 38 WASP members were killed in service, they were not considered military members, and were denied pay and benefits awarded to men. After years of struggle, they were finally awarded veterans' status in 1977. Legislation passed in July 2009 authorized the medals awarded this week, a long overdue recognition of the important work these women performed.

The American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport features a permanent exhibit honoring the WASPs. In September 2009, the museum hosted a ceremony commemorating their service.

Lauria-Blum is the curator of the museum's WASP exhibit, a driving force in honoring the WASPS. She was in Washington to accept the Gold Medal on behalf of Long Island native Marjorie Gray, WASP Class 43-W-1, who passed away two years ago.

This Gold Medal finally recognizes the service these women offered to the country, as well as their role in helping to break down barriers to equality in everyday life. They trailblazing performance has led to today's Air Force, where many women proudly serve, including two who have flown with the famed Thunderbirds demonstration team.

Hey There Polar Bear...

In what has become an annual event, a group of hearty souls submersed themselves in the waters of Oyster Bay on a cold Sunday afternoon. The 6th Annual Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County was held on Sunday, March 7. Music, hot drinks and free hot dogs helped entertain the crowd while waiting for the brave swimmers to go for a dip.

The Atlantic Steamer Fire Company Water Rescue team watched over the swimmers.

The crowd rushed into the water...

...and most quickly rushed back out.

But as always, a small group looked to see how long they could stay in the water!

Even the rescue crew joined in the fun.

It was a fun afternoon, and served to raise money for a worthwhile cause. But even with air temperatures some 20 degrees warmer than 2009, you won't catch me jumping into the water during the winter!

A little snow never bothered anyone...but it is getting old. Following our latest little bout with the white stuff, I ventured out over the weekend to see what Mother Nature left us.

Heading to the office in Locust Valley on Saturday morning, I was greeted with wet roads and beautiful snow covered scenery.

The next day, I stopped to see an old friend, Felix 101, standing guard outside the Northrop Grumman plant in Bethpage.

Have we now seen the last of the snow? We can only hope.

Yes, we are getting more snow today. And yes, I am tired of it. No, I didn't take any pictures this time...at least not yet. After a day of rain and wind on Thursday, I was hoping a late change to snow would mean nothing more than a couple of inches. The forecast had been for heavy snow in New York City and west, with lesser amounts on Long Island. This morning, we were greeted with close to a foot of the white stuff, with no end in sight to the falling precipitation.

The phone ringing at 5:30am was the boss, telling me our office would be opening at Noon (I'm working for the Census Bureau) but I decided my staff would appreciate it if I held off until 7am to pass along that news. As I was clearing snow at 10am, the boss called again to say the office would be closed for the day. I feel like a little kid, with school being canceled!

Speaking of clearing snow, I have to thank my neighbor. Several years ago, he bought a big snowblower. This was a couple of years after my old one finally died. It's been a lifesaver, making quick work of that white mess on the walks and driveway.

Snow Day

After dodging a snowstorm of historic proportions that blanketed the Mid-Atlantic coast last weekend, we were not as lucky this week. A major storm struck New York City and Long Island, bringing a foot or more of snow to the region.

Leaving the Neighborhood

A familiar sight on the Oyster Bay waterfront will soon be leaving.

Nantucket Lightship 112 was built in 1936, to replace the lightship lost in the collision between RMS Olympic and Lightship 117 in 1934. The ship was retired in 1975, and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. Acquired by the National Lighthouse Museum on Staten Island, the lightship has been docked at the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay since 2003.

In October 2009, she was acquired by the new U.S. Lightship Museum group, with plans to move her to Boston for restoration and display. Preparations for the move are almost complete, and the ship should be heading out any day now.

WABC-TV paid a visit to the Airpower Museum on February 3, 2010. News anchors Diana Williams and Sade Baderinwa hosted a live broadcast from the museum focusing on issues effecting military veterans, including health care and unemployment. Following the broadcast, Williams and Baderinwa were joined by others from the WABC news team, where they conducted a town hall meeting, inviting members of the community to voice opinions, ask questions, and have their issues heard.

While veterans have gained added recognition in recent years, their problems are all too often overlooked. Veterans have a higher rate of unemployment than the general population, often suffer from service-related illnesses and injuries that have not been properly cared for, and sadly, have a high rate of homelessness. After giving so much to this country, is it asking too much for veterans to be treated properly? Events like this bring a much needed focus on the problems these brave men and women face every day.

Several months ago, I was contacted by a gentleman writing an article for a Canadian aviation magazine. To accompany his piece on radar systems to detect bird activity, he requested the use of this photo of mine from the crash of US Airways Flight 1549.

I was offered the magazine's standard fee of $25 for photo usage, along with a copy of the magazine once it was published. Recently, I received the check from the magazine publishers. Taking it to the bank this weekend, I ran into a bit of a problem. Seems the check was (naturally) drawn on a Canadian bank. My bank told me it would cost me $40 for them to cash it, since it came from a foreign bank. Since I didn't want to end up $15 behind in the deal, I decided the check will become a souvenir of the event. It will go nicely with the Red Light Camera ticket I got from New York City the night of the crash!

Hockey Night on Long Island

Saturday evening I had the chance to attend a SUNY Stony Brook hockey game. It was quite a change from the Islander games I've attended - just a few hundred fans in attendance, a small community skating rink, and plenty of access for photos!

We were sitting next to the band for part of the game...

The hometown boys played a spirited game, and fought to overcome an early deficit, but came up just short.

One Year Later

Today marks the first anniversary of the "Miracle On The Hudson", the successful ditching of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. On Thursday, January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, departed La Guardia Airport with 150 passengers and 5 crew. Shortly after takeoff, they encountered a flock of Canada Geese, and the multiple bird strikes caused them to loose power in both engines. With insufficient altitude to return to La Guardia or reach nearby Teterboro Airport, the flight crew opted to ditch the aircraft in the Hudson River. Thanks to a controlled touchdown, and the fast action by the nearby water taxi service, all 155 were rescued, most with only minor injuries. The aircraft continued to float in the river, carried south by the current. It eventually was tied up near Battery Park City, some 4 miles from where it landed. It remained in the water until late Saturday night, when it was lifted onto a barge and moved to Jersey City where the NTSB examined the wreckage.

A job well done by Captain "Sully" Sullenberger (a former Air Force pilot!) First Officer Jeff Skiles, and Flight Attendants Sheila Dail, Doreen Welsh, and Donna Dent, as well as the many who came to the rescue of the passengers and crew. Miracle doesn't come close to describing it!

First spotting of 2010

Sunday was a cold day, but the lure of a special visitor brought me out for a little aircraft spotting. A Saudi 747SP was due in at JFK in the afternoon - there aren't many SPs left in operation, so seeing one in New York is a rare treat.

I decided it was a little too cold to meet up with the gang at 7:30am, but I made sure I didn't miss the little SP!

A time for new beginnings...

With 2009 behind us, I am looking forward to big things in the new year. I started out with a New Year's Day visit to Jones Beach, where a surprising number of people braved the cold for a walk along the beach to ring in the new year. Despite the cold, children were playing, couples were strolling, and the occasional treasure hunter combed the beach...

We should make the most of it - before we know it, 2010 will be a fading memory as well...
